Change is never easy
Even good change can be difficult. I’ve noticed that as people age, they begin to resist change on nearly every level. Routine becomes comfortable and any deviation from the norm can upset our delicate sense of balance.
And yet God often guides us to take a new direction. It is important to stay attuned to His Word and listen to His leading. Even when that direction isn’t comfortable and the change isn’t easy.
Of course, not every new venture is hard to handle. A lot of it depends on how we look at it.
We’ve had a few of those changes in our life in recent days. Actually, one has been a matter of prayer for months, a decision that was a long time coming. This past week we finalized the decision to follow God’s leading to a new church with the hopes of a new ministry. We don’t have all the details yet, but we are excited to see what God has in store for us.
Still, it is never easy to leave a church, to feel as though you don’t have a place to call home. It is especially hard to leave the friendships, though some of those friendships will hopefully last even after we are settled in our new location. And really, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we will always feel a comraderie with people whom we have worshipped with for so many years.
Other changes are bound to come in the not-so-distant future. With adult kids living at home, one never knows when they will find that right girl or chase a faraway dream. Life is an adventure – if only I can always keep that in mind! :)
The final change that happened this week was the death of a man from my past. He was close to my dad’s age, and his funeral will bring together relatives that I haven’t seen in a long time. It’s strange how we only see some family members at weddings and funerals. Sad really, because if it were up to me we’d see our relatives more often.
For those relatives that love the Lord and those Christian friends we’ve made in churches over the years and through other means all over the world, change is never permanent. Even death has hope because we will be together again one day in heaven with the Lord.
On earth, significant change is never easy. But we have so much here and in the age to come to look forward to!
In the meantime, I sense much change in my future. I’m praying for grace to embrace God’s leading and hang on for the adventure.
