Encouragement

I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to get discouraged these days, and how much a simple word of encouragement can mean. Solomon said it best in Proverbs 25:11 “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” Have you tasted any golden apples lately?

I’ll admit that too often I’m the one needing the encouragement. Maybe that’s because writers face so much rejection that we grasp at every snippet of acceptance. Maybe I focus on my own needs too much. But if the truth were known, all people put themselves first, at least in their own thoughts. Perhaps that is why Jesus told us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” And the apostle Paul told men to love their wives and to cherish them like they do their own bodies, “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it.” God knew how self-seeking we are, so He taught us how to love using comparisons we couldn’t miss.

Still, most of us don’t think very often about other people or their needs. Most of us, if we’re truly honest are pretty self-absorbed with our lives, our jobs, our families–just getting through the day is a chore sometimes. The average person on the street isn’t thinking about the person next to them in line at the store or sitting next to them in class. We don’t care about how they act or what they say unless it directly affects us. We don’t realize how much a kind word or a genuine smile can brighten a person’s day.

I ask myself, when was the last time I offered a golden word of encouragement to someone in need? When was the last time I lived like Jesus before others?

Oh Lord, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Strength and my Redeemer.”

May I place settings of silver around me today and serve apples of gold to all who come near.

And I’ll start now with this – thank you to all who stop by my website and to those who drop me a line now and then. I appreciate you all so much! May God bless you today!

Tinsel Balls and Bargains

A new year brings change, like it or not. Sometimes I wish change wouldn’t happen so fast, but time waits for no man – or woman either.

The good change is that things are almost back to normal. Still fighting some illness around the house, and some people I care about are facing more confusing health issues. Kids come and go and I enjoy the moments when they are all at home more with each passing day. And I’m learning to take one day at a time and ask God to direct my path. When I pray for direction, a new idea often comes to mind that I hadn’t thought of before. But the idea doesn’t always come to fruition. So I also pray for God to close the doors to the paths that aren’t right for me–at least at this time.

One door shut this week on a ministry that I thought might pan out. I’d hoped for it for a number of months, a local writing project. But God’s ways are not my ways, and I know that He has work for me to do for Him, even while I wait on responses to my book writing.

Some of that work involves being a wife, mom, and homemaker. Yesterday, I earned sore shoulders from all the floor scrubbing, but well, sometimes a house just needs cleaning, you know? The day before I spent a few hours at the store buying food and such to feed my family, and among the miscellaneous items I purchased was a package of tinsel balls for our two kitties. Actually, only one cat plays with them–the one-year-old Tiger. The first pack he received as a Christmas gift. The second is for when he has lost all of the first pack…or destroyed them. Have you ever seen a cat play with a tinsel ball?

Tiger loves tinsel balls, better than crinkle balls (which are much less messy, of course!) The problem comes in when I sweep the kitchen floor and find more tinsel than cat hair! Believe me, there is always plenty of cat hair! At first it was fun to watch him play, and it’s better than listening to two kitties fight. :) But I got a little tired of sweeping up tinsel! And finding it all over the carpeting too. So much to Tiger’s dismay, we’re taking a break from the tinsel balls!

Today was another shopping day, this time with my mom, to return one thing, and buy a few others. I hit some great bargains! My favorite is a Yankee candle, Christmas cookie scent, that I happened to find. A twenty dollar candle was half off and I had a coupon! So I paid $8 for a $20 candle. Love the scent!

Tinsel balls and bargains and more waiting on the Lord’s leading. I’ll say one thing for life and each new year…it sure is interesting! And never boring! :)

New Year, New Spotlight, New Releases!

Happy New Year! Today was our traditional “undo” Christmas day, the time when all the ornaments and decorations come down. We almost succeeded. I’m still surrounded by boxes and the bare tree is still standing in the family room waiting to be taken apart and put in the basement. Life is almost back to normal. I hope your day was productive and enjoyable. :)

I’ve got a new Spotlight interview with author Elizabeth White. Click on over and check it out!

And it is a new month with new releases in Christian fiction. Check out these books!

Colton Parker is hired to find a dying man’s son, but becomes the target of outlaw biker gangs and powerful politicians.

5. The Secret of Us by Roxanne Henke. If love dies, is a promise–’till death do us part’–enough to make a marriage last?

6. Through Every Storm by Sharlene MacLaren from Whitaker House. Jeff and Maddie Bowman grieve over the death of their child and find healing with the help of a precocious seven-year-old.

This might be a good time to spend some of that Christmas money. :) One can never have too many books!

Spotlight on Elizabeth White

I have not had the privilege of meeting Elizabeth White in person yet. We had hoped that would happen at the ACFW Conference this past September, but with hundreds of people milling around, somehow we missed each other. But after reading her novel, Under Cover of Darkness a few months ago, I asked Beth for an interview for Spotlight. She graciously agreed.BethWhite09

Elizabeth White was born in Mobile, Alabama, but grew up in north Mississippi. In 1979 she earned a music education degree from Mississippi State University (which is where she met her husband, Scott). She and her husband attended seminary in Fort Worth and wound up serving at a church in Mobile! While their two children were small, Beth performed as a vocalist and flutist and taught music lessons—privately as well as at church and in a variety of public and private schools. All this time she was writing fiction as a hobby.
