Voting for Morality

Tomorrow will be the 7th time I’ve gone to the polls to cast my vote for President of the United States. Actually, I vote in most every election, but there is something more daunting, more serious about voting for our country’s next president. So much hangs on electing a man who has high integrity.

I’ve lived through presidents that I didn’t choose and watched numerous scandals surround those in the highest office. Integrity is something few men in politics understand anymore. Too many are willing to compromise morality for votes.

I’ll be honest. I don’t vote based on political party. My vote is swayed by moral issues. If a man is not willing to defend the life of the weakest citizen, he is not worthy to command the most respected job in the land. If he is willing to kill the unborn for the sake of research (fetal stem cell research), he does not truly value life at all. For those of you who haven’t studied this topic (I have), fetal stem cells can be taken from the umbilical cords of newborn babies (which might prove helpful to science), but current research uses the cells of aborted babies. Some politicians would have us believe that abortion and current fetal stem cell research are beneficial to society. They’re not.

The question has been raised – if you had to choose between moral issues and the economy – assuming that one candidate could improve the economy above the other – which would you choose? Moral issues would win hands down every time. Why?

Because God has a lot to say about life and sexual morality. The God of the Bible is pro-life. He is also pro-marriage – one man and one woman. That’s been His design since creation. And He isn’t about to change.

God is also the one who sends famine and drought, things that effect the economy, when people live in wanton disobedience to Him. Yes, there are things we can do to help the economy, like stop sending our jobs overseas, but ultimately, the wealth this nation has enjoyed over the years is a gift from His hand. Considering how we have spurned His commands, is it not within His right to shake us up a little, to get our attention? Nothing gets our attention better than to touch our money.

I believe God can and will take care of us if we trust Him. So the economy doesn’t worry me a whole lot. Not nearly as much as how flippantly we ignore God’s laws where life and morality are concerned. These are the only political issues that truly matter. And I’ll be casting my vote for life tomorrow.
